Two Emperors in One
We gave each other new identities
As ghosts might when transfused with lovers’ blood.
Where once we had been rootless, leafless trees,
Limbs bloom. Red cherry comes from urgent bud.
Where once we looked out from two far extremes,
With oceans or two continents apart,
We gaze now from one tower, surveying dreams,
Our skyline built on bedrock called the heart.
It is as if there once was only space
Until a vast explosion filled it all
With energy and matter–and God’s grace–
Our later oneness breaking Eden’s fall.
We sit, one emperor, on a throne love made,
Our single armor wrought of gold-wired jade.
