The Verges of Oblivion

These ones lie now in death except in scraps
Like tombstones, marriage licenses, and birth
Certificates. From these no useful maps
Can be constructed of their lives on earth.
They lie beyond the boundary of the known
Though they once suffered marriage hates and pains.
These facts about these grooms and brides were sown
In salt instead of farmland. Rubbed out stains
Are what are left, if even those, and not
Those even. Mormon family history sleuths
Can find in record offices a jot
Or tittle but will never find lost truths.
Perhaps a two-line story will be read
In newsprint, but these souls are doubly dead.
