The Skylark
Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem
The skylark sings in darkness and in light,
Away down there just at the edge trees,
And then away beyond them, in its flight,
And from the ground while seeking out the breeze
Which helps to lift it up to heaven’s song
In sun or clouds that stud the sky. It sings
An earnestness with fluttering launch, a long
Intense wholeheartedness with lifting wings
That take its passion far beyond the ground,
Fastidious each note but feral in
Charisma, vehement and high all round
As if the world were not the realm of sin,
So vertical the hopes and aim that we
….Are left behind and, yet, are lifted in their spree.
