The Sacredness of Steak

     The Sacredness of Steak

A rite of sacrifice and hunting kill

Were when an ancient Greek could gnaw some meat.

At other times he had to have bean stew or grill

Some fish or octopus the local fleet

Hauled in.  The local lord, who served as priest

To tribal gods, would say a prayer and some

Assistant acolyte would kill the beast.

Or when the hunt was done, a slice or crumb

Of venison might be your lot.  A hen

Might have to do instead—if you can call

That meat.  But otherwise unlucky men

Would have to settle for some veg.  That’s all.

..No wonder gods were worshiped if their rites

….Delivered blood and flesh and fat’s delights.
