The Purpose of the Cosmos
Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem
Dawns come and go. The twilights blaze and fade.
The phases of the moon go round and round
In slivers and in spheres. Sea days are made
Unendingly and cavern nights are found
Again, again, again. Numb planets rise
And fall away and constellations lean,
Repeating time, time, time. Those blazing eyes,
The galaxies, look down. We are unseen
By all of this, but passion blots them out.
Their nothingness becomes a silence when
A man is battered by his lover’;s pout.
The universe is shattered in those men
Who know the beauty of a pupil, glance
And lashes. Love alone then has a chance.
