The Opposite of Agnostic Swooning
The reason God made starlings fly was for
Those murmurations. Nothing else about
These birds is worth the trouble. Swoop and soar
In each elastic shape–they leave no doubt
That they are Sky Divinity’s broad span,
As graceful as religions hope to be.
They sweep, expand, implode, a holy klan
Devoted to a revelation free
Of proof that atheists’ prefer to pose.
These shapes like nothing else, or, if they are
Like something they move shifting in the throes
Of holiness from seraphim bizarre.
Yet always through these silhouettes we spy
A sacredness like Allah in a sigh.
