The Olympics

               The Olympics

From distant parts, as far as the Black Sea,

Far flung as eastern Spain and all around

The Greek dispersion’s width, divinity

Called men to try themselves on summer ground.

The hottest time of year was chosen for

The Games.  Why Zeus picked this time is outside

Our human knowledge.  Cowards could ignore

The summons.  Weaklings could turn tail and hide

Behind excuses, but the god’s command

Was clear as Greek blue skies and Athens’ sun.

Besides the god, each man had his demand

For self-respect.  These men had hopes to stun

Their fellow men and please the hearts on high

Olympus,  please divine and manly eye.
