The Beekeeper Ponders the Exceptional Hexagon
Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem
Saturn’s North Pole cloud formation
The heavy hexagons of rock that shaped
In heated rock, the lava as it cooled
To basalt in the Giant’s Causeway, aped
The form of cells in honeycomb. These ruled
Constructions are like snowflakes and the vast
Cloud hexagon at Saturn’s northern pole
At twenty thousand miles across, that massed
Gas structure several-sided. In the whole
Of space, there seem to be but few of these
Formations, yet some diatoms, quite small,
Much smaller than the snowflakes, freely squeeze
Out hexagons exactly, far from scrawl.
..The code in insect eyes results in tiles,
….Six-sided, of mosaic ordered styles.
