Tahiti’s Ocean Undertow
is Not Strong Enough
Vision after the Sermon. Paul Gaugin. Wikipedia
They come, these aching diamonds of pain
And beauty. Those who search for them are bound
For disappointment. Those who try to gain
Them through a pilgrimage where others found
Them doom themselves to failure like a nun
Who uses rosaries and prayers to reach
Theophany, a vision that would stun
With bezel agony. Romantic beach
And crescent palm trees underneath full
Moon won’t accomplish what we want though we
Fly off in Concorde for the tugging pull
Of love’s tropic tides. Serendipity
Alone will bring us to the brink of prophet sight,
And utterness, some unexpected night.
