Swallowing

               Swallowing

We feel as if we’ve swallowed jewels, when we

Encounter love. The emeralds go straight

Up to the mind, inducing it to see

Forever-spreading rivers in full spate.

A ruby goes, mainlining, to our hearts

And turns them into shining, glowing red,

Then glistens all along the veins, kick starts

An aching swelling, powerful as dread.

The diamonds flow through arteries like dust

From stars exploding, make us feel as bold

As centaurs, hot with bright consuming lust

And paradoxically make motives gold.

Men become strong as jade, set in sterling,

Women soft as bright quicksilver, swirling.
