Queen for a Day
When “Queen for a Day” came on, my world stilled.
Whatever else was happening, my day
Went solemn like a praying nun who filled
Her heart with peace. I knew that come what may
A needy woman miraculously
Would have oppressive troubles swept away.
Her type of praying, not on bended knee,
Was telling of her sob story with gay,
Brave tears and painful smiles. The other two
Contestants did the same. Then one of them
Was chosen, showered with presents, her hairdo
Surmounted with a crown, an ermine hem
Upon her one-day robe, her debts wiped out,
Her crippled daughter turned to a Girl Scout!
