The picture shows the severed head and neck
Of Orpheus beside a stream. No doubt

Eyes being closed implies this muscled wreck
Of pulsings struggled, suffered, and cried out
While being sacrificed to frenzy’s claws,
Devotion’s claws, to adoration’s rips.
The frenzy of the women followed laws
Of love in panic so they spared his lips,
Those lips which sang of sacred things like love
And war deaths of the heroes. Laurels, hair
And perfect nose were held outside, above
The slaughter. Hands spared the perfect body there.
..The gore and wounded stump from worship’s fire
….In devotees is hidden by the sacred lyre.
