Over Millennia

                Over Millennia

The autumn, with tall steppings like giraffes,

Brings colors taller, taller than the rest

Of seasons.  Graceful, slim months come like laughs

Of palettes, legs and necks in step and blessed

Like warmer spots, a million autumn leaves

Upon the hills.  Giraffe-like movement sways

October and November.  Autumn weaves

This speckling beauty on the leaves.  It stays

But briefly just as Africa’s high beasts

Move past, unstopping on the veldt.  The trees

Are stripped in Africa and Fall, the feasts

Of animals and time as air heights freeze.

The branches do not fall.  The trees stand firm.

Giraffes and trunks give steadiness its term.
