Out of Joint with Petty Time

If you are filled with contradictions, you

Have hope and not despair alone.  You may

Not be a Hamlet with a prince’s view

Of kings and purgatories.  Ghosts waylay:

You sometimes think of suicide, though full

Of love your life and marriage are and with

A daughter you adore.  Often woeful

You nonetheless hold on to life.  The pith

Of meaning in your universe at times

Goes past your grasp.  You hold on still to life

Because of certain ringing, golden chimes,

The fact of motherhood and being wife.

More like a princess as a paradigm

You think eternity outweighs pain’s time.
