Nightmare in Plato’s Cave
“Antony Hatzistavrou (‘“Correctness” and Poetic Knowledge: Choric Poetry in the Laws’)
defends the claim that ‘a work of art is beautiful if and only if it successfully represents a
beautiful original’.” ~ http://ndpr.nd.edu/news/plato-and-the-poets/
Is Marilyn without her make-up on
The beautiful original? Is Brad
Pitt (“Legends of the Fall”) before the dawn
Of wickedness in him ideal? What bad
Is there in Johnny Depp before that scene,
That “Nightmare” gore? Original and sweet

The boy shone. His beauty filled the screen.
Was that the beauty Plato meant, complete
In every way a young man haunts Ideal
Pronouncements? Contemplate just what the flick
Would be without the monster in the reel.
The boring beauty soon would make us sick
And tired of loveliness. Implied in this
Is that an ideal horror movie takes the piss
Out of Plato.
