Night Brain

             Night Brain

In dreams impossibilities are rife.

A human haunts us with his eyes, both closed

And open, both at once.  A faithful wife

We left for fling and fun is there transposed

To be our mother too.  The man who raped

Us as a child is kindly in abuse

In night time visions.  Loathsome, he’s escaped

To numb forgiveness.  Nightmares are obtuse

Behind our flickering lids.  Dreams force us to

Accept stupidities like flying with

Our churning feet above the ground.  The pew

We’re sitting on becomes a monolith

Of threat.  Then suddenly we’re free to leap

Like gambolling lambs in amorous sleep.
