The esoteric scent of peonies
Belongs to aliens, to Czars’ domains,
To empires now forgotten, Viennese
Commanders with silk helmets on campaigns,
With crests of dusky pink perfumes attached.
The esoteric scent of orange groves
Is ivory fragrance, heavenly, unmatched,
More heavily cashmered than Sultan’s cloves.
Chrysanthemums have atheistic smells
Since Buddha set aside divinity.
They fill up white walled Pure Land abbots’ cells.
The white ones breathe out Christ’s virginity.
..The esoteric scents of lily blooms
….Are succulent and prized in sect-like rooms.
