Meditation in Blue in
Salisbury Cathedral
How many deaths have been remembered here
At Evensongs throughout the centuries? Dim
Concordance in the form of music, tear,
And candlelight is maybe only slim,
But somehow harmony between them brings
Us solace of a twilight, pastel kind.
And this is strange since as the male choir sings
Its robes are of a color that was mined
In heaven’s royal bluest heights. It should
Have made for stronger compositions than
The one concocted in the dark warm wood
Of choir stalls mixed with grief in you, young man.
..But that is where we went as others must
Have done for centuries celebrating dust.
