Lost Legends Long Before the Vedas and the Iliad

Lost Legends Long Before the Vedas and the Iliad

Go far enough in time and all becomes

Strict mists and stone.  Fire circles heard the tales

So long forgotten now that tribal drums

Are recent evolutions, compared.  Trails

Do not exist to take us back to spells

And legends forebears chanted long before

King Arthur was conceived.  A shaman’s bells

Might be quite modern too compared to lore

We cannot now imagine.  Yet the flow

Of myths at some fogged moment turned to men,

Away from Gods, to men’s and women’s glow

Set off by Grendel’s slime enroaching from the fen.

..That saga, too, is far too young.   We hear

….It far more fiercely than a Stone Age fear.
