January Daffodils
The daffodils are shouting up above
Midwinter snow. They shout Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! HA!
And Happy! Happy! HAPPY! All in love
With yelling yellow, filling snow with awe
Of promises of spring, blooms feel quite smug
That they have sprung up there beside a curve
So we can’t snap them from the coach. They shrug
Off swaying cameras as our windows swerve
Past optimism’s glory. All at once
They’re gone—though only gone from view.
They’ve shoved the winter to the chair a dunce
Should sit on weeping ice, boo hoo hoo hoo.
..The laughter is like trumpets in a jazz
….Band blatting out their brassy razzmatazz.
