How the Cypress Came to Be
Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem
Sylvanus loved the boy and gave a gift
To Cyparissus, gave the boy a doe.
He doted on it. Then the truest shift
Occurred. Sylvanus killed it with his bow
And arrow, pointed, hardened, entering shaft.
Some say that this was accidental, this
Destruction, but Sylvanus used some craft
In killing off the female. He saw bliss
Inside the young one’s heart, the bliss of love,
And not for him. His jealousy went mad.
He shot the femininity. Above
All else he loved the boy and made him sad.
..To save him from his awful sobbing grief,
….The boy was turned to hardened bark and leaf.
