Hanging on the Cross

       Hanging on the Cross

“I have it on the highest authority that friendship is at least as great as heterosexual romantic love.  ‘Greater love hath no man than this that he should lay down his life for his friends.’” ~ Phillip Whidden to Charles Randall Stanfield, November 10, 2010

Christ Jesus thought that two gay friends who love

Each other share affection that is great

As that of Romeo.  It’s not above

Their male with male affection.  The state

Of marriage and of parenthood is not

To be considered better either.  Or

At least it’s true that gay for gay love ought

To be as much respected (maybe more)

If one gay man lays down his life to save

The guy he loves.  The logic is as clear

As it could be and it is strong and grave.

It’s sacrificial, whether straight or queer.

The macho ones who cut off ears with sword

Aren’t better than John’s savior, John’s hung Lord.
