Floating Between the Stars and the Depths
Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem
Black unseen forces move the stars above
Us and below the southern hemisphere.
Some unseen forces like the wind and love,
And tides, and currents, clearest atmosphere
And gravity demand that icebergs float.
Jamaica sized some giant frozen floes
Break off unseen from ice shelves and devote
Their paths to northward climes. Unseen ice knows
Unknowingly that it must last as long
As minor gods who are themselves resigned
To seep. The causes like the stars are strong.
Unheard the scream (which caused the split) consigned
The island-like Antarctic mass, pronounced
Its doom. Unseen the death was unannounced.
