Ein Besuch in München

Ein Besuch in München:  [A Visit to Munich:
Karl und Oberrheinisch    [Karl and Oberrheinisch

Your eyes have power like the holy ones
That shine so wet and wide as England’s saint
Attacks the writhing dragon, calmly runs
The lance through that reptilian throat.  The paint
This artist once smoothed on appears with cracks
Across the forehead of the princess, who,
In regal gratitude, kneels because she lacks
The strength in her uplifted fingers to
Repay George for his goodness or his gifts.
Not even love would be enough, and I,
Who thought the ravages of scars and rifts
Across my heart had left it hard and dry
(Too much like dragon scales), can only place
My thankful hands on your salvific face.

A poem about a painting by Ludwig Oberrheinisch, active 1430-1440
