“Do We Really Need the Moon?”

“Do We Really Need the Moon?”

[The title of a programme about science on BBC 4 television]

Our madnesses are necessary for

Romance and yet they loom in us sometimes,

A waxing that becomes too much—and more—

A full moon magnified by mist and crimes

Of one obsession or another.  Light

Grows greater or we cause eclipses of

Its force so shadows lengthen in our night

Increasing threats to balances in love.

The tides inside our chests and in our hearts

Go washing grimly at the darker stones

     .

There in our wave crashed souls and rib grabbed parts.

We find we can’t be rational.  Our moans

Say wordlessly we shouldn’t want the moon

And love should have the clarity of noon.
