Do Not Be Silly about Dalí or French Alexandrines

Do Not Be Silly about Dalí or French Alexandrines

no room for dream and its inexact flower ~ Lorca, “Ode to Salvador Dalí,”

(Oda a Savador Dalí)

We still have room for dreams as well as flowers.

Uncertain blooms? They fail to exist, no

Approximate lilies.  His signal powers

Include punctilious draughtsmanship, slow

To take on fuzziness.  Renoir and all

That lot were far too dreamy for his dreams,

His hard-edged nightmare stuff, so don’t appal

With inexactitude like chocolate creams

In printed tins.  Uphold the truth with lines

Lined up exactly, though acaso not

Iambics.  Centuries’ sapience defines

What ears have known.  We don’t need fault and clot.

That freedom which results in mess is worse

Than level beauty found in bevelled verse.
