Mountain cherry blooms

Fall.  Petals scatter over

 Water-wheel and brook.

~ Chigetsu (Englished by Phillip Whidden

The water wheel is always turning round

And round.  Its movement is unchanging yet

Unchangingness in this is always found

To be relentless, firm.  These facts are threat

To anyone who does not live by truth.

The seasons are unchanging in their change.

Old age and death and dissolution youth

Must suffer.  Only lack of change is strange.

The cherry blossoms open and they fall

Upon the churning wheel and water of

The brook, which constantly is changing all

The time unlike the Trinity, its love.

While water and the cherry petals swirl

To doom, their end is entropy’s far whorl.
