When Pope devised heroic couplets, they

Were like the weapons of the day men walked

With by their thighs.  Their rapiers’ display

Was more than that.  His couplets sharply stalked

His prey, poor other poets, yes, of course,

And politicians, yes, of course.  Once his

Heroic couplets hit their mark, their source

Became a target.  Hatred from the dunces

Attacked by them produced recurring threats

Against him.  Pope weighed just about an ounce

Since he was four foot six. None placed big bets

That he would win steel bouts.  His big dog Bounce

Was his companion when he strolled along

In case some enemy proposed a prong.
