Balls and Phallic Symbol
Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem
“Eros with the golden curls
Throws me the purple ball
And calls me to play with
The girl with the bright-colored sandals”
~ Anakreon
And what if love did not have darts but threw
A purple ball at you for you to catch?
Would you lunge to it? What if it were blue
(The color of depression), would you snatch
It from the air and press it to your chest?
And what if it were yellow, vast and glad,
Would that encourage you? Would that be best?
But then again, what if the ball were sad
In depth, like black, the color of a heart
Both bruised and broken, would you reach to clasp
It in your ribs? Would you prefer the smart
Of arrow pain to make your breast cage gasp?
..I’d lurch to grab the ball no matter what
….It’s hue and take the arrow where it cut.
