Ashoka Sees Devi for the First Time
He fell in love with Devi in a blink,
A fraction of an ancient second. She
Was far too beautiful. Who would re-think
His chest throb’s pang? The prince could not be free
Of her (or love) again, no never, no.
He did not ponder for a moment more
Than lightning lashes through a cloud the blow
She struck. The rains of love began to pour
Inside his monsoon chest. They washed away
Mere doubt, if any there had been. The rinse
Was total. He did not have time to say,
“Will beauty come from her? Will lovely prince
And princess come from there below her heart?”
Ashoka felt a single flashing smart.
