Arthur Moody
He used to play ice hockey at John Nike
The leisure center here in Berkshire where
That sort of thing went on. This boy was like
A miracle because I couldn’t square
His clear intelligence with something dumb
Like sport. But then the only reason he
Attracted my attention was the drum
Of brilliance pounding in such high degree
In that first essay. I felt just amazed
That so much smartness could be wasted on
That game and couldn’t really be unfazed
By so much cleverness. It was a dawn.
It turned out that I had to be less trite
In attitude. That writing was too bright.
