Disc World: Soapstone Discs Found Thousands of Years Later in a Dried Up Watercourse

Millennia ago, before CDs
And DVDs, artistic discs were made
In India with carved motifs to please
Their owners. Birds were set there in a braid
With animals around the edges. Bloom
Of lotus and of female beauty lay

Upon the surfaces. The central womb
Was not depicted in this disc ballet
But wombs were well implied. A wealth
Of animals was held in these designs.
Were discs for rituals of gods, or health,
Of women? Parrots, peacocks, geese and lions
Were joined with a rhinoceros and birds
Of prey. The makers left no helpful words.
