Royal Daydreams

Royal Daydreams

Far back in sultry climates of the past,
The humid distances of time, a prince
Might have a childish inkling of the vast
Preoccupations of a king, might wince
At thoughts of heads that he would lop off for
The sake of empire, and might understand
In tiny child-like ways the steaming gore
The future held. For him to gain the land
Required to be a king of kings, his dreams
Would have to turn to slaughter. In his brain
His kiddie fantasies would make the screams.
Would agonies result and leave a stain
Inside him as he played on ramparts, walls,
And towers? For me at least the thought appalls.
