Perpetual Quietude
Why would immortal gods or angels pause
In thankfulness for moments, hours — for time?
Why would such beings think it needs applause
Since after all each day is just a chime
To tell them they have years forever. Souls
Eternal in their state are not required
To be concerned for daylight as it scrolls
Out endlessly. If these ones have desired
Supernal things the colors of deep joy
And have not got them yet, the calmest wait
Is all that is entailed. They need deploy
Tranquility alone with slowest gate.
For what they lack, they only want to bide
Infinity with placid bridal stride.
