Hush
Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may
lay her young, even thine altars, O Lord of hosts, my King, and my God. ~ Psalm 84:3
The swallow and the sparrow do not sing
Beside God’s throne. They find their houses, build
Their nests and lay their young there … place a wing
Across the fledglings when their homes are filled.
The tiny ones need shields of pinions from
The searing glory there. Perhaps a fear
For eggs and feathered fledglings may well come
From thoughts that also others threaten near
Those altars with their mouths and feet poised, too,
Since God has made the cuckoo and the hawk.
This explains the silence. Song would be askew.
Pure joy among that light would be a mock.
..The smoking glory of the Lord is fraught.
….The little birds know this and hunch, distraught.
