A Sudden Island

            A Sudden Island

A sudden island surges from the sea

Where once low waves were rulers of the heights.

A plume of smoke like Lucifer’s goatee

Spreads white across the water.  Lava spites

The peaceful brine and pushes up a brief

Excuse for land made of debris.  Heat

Has moments in this temporary reef,

But only moments.  There is nothing neat

In this exploding boil.  It is like

Some low grade passion (here read “lust”) that blooms

And withers in the Red Sea, or a spike,

This sulphurous  icicle of fires that booms.

..And then it goes.  It simply disappears,

….Its steam less missed than temporary tears.
