The Space We Dream In

   The Space We Dream In

The space we dream in is inside our ribs.

It isn’t just inside our hearts.  It takes

In lungs as well.  Our chests are little cribs

For sleeping infants, little drowsy aches

We want to be full-grown but are afraid

Will turn out wrong, nightmares of thalidomide.

And so we play it safe.  We barricade

Them blind in daydreams, don’t let them elide

With actuality, or sneakily

We keep them in our unprotected sleep

And make sure they don’t escape leakily.

It’s better if they stay there held heart deep.

..Don’t let them out.  Don’t let them breathe in light.

….Keep them all coddled in your careful night.
