Sacrificial Investments
“In exile, life was a stage where literature’s masterpieces
were played out,” the poet wrote in “Illuminations,”
several years before moving to Harar. “I could share
untold riches that remain unknown.”

His life with Paul in London was a world
Beyond that time and firmly set inside
It. Love’s work there was poetries (both swirled
Around) and paradoxes to collide
And also to repulse each other like
Some subatomic particles are drawn
Towards each other’s space but when they strike
Against their partner’s gravity, they spawn
Explosions as mutations. The results
Are thermonuclear, hot lives and verse
Yet unimagined. Lives and lines grew cults
Unguessed though hinted. Oracles, they nurse
The destiny to come. They see in part
Their losses on the far side of the heart.
