at Night from the
International Space Station
Before Jehovah’s breath commanded light,
The dark ruled absolute in every place
Except where God enjoyed his perfect might,
Perhaps. There was no nighttime there. God’s face
Was altogether fire but maybe veiled
Until he threw that curtain back and said,
“Let there be light.” The gloom was then impaled
With shafts of brilliance. If the dark knew dread
Before that time, before God flashed his beard,
That fear would have flared up instantly when
Light ravished darkness. Till then flame was weird,
But, outright, beams became the great amen.
Tonight in cities well within the range
Of sky-born cameras only black is strange.
