Loving Water
Love’s well is living water or a spring
Of liquid life. It comes to us. We search
It out. To this encounter we both bring
Our liplike offering, mouths as in the church
Of adoration. Love is full of thirst
For us, as full as we for drink. The need
Is double. Which one reaches out the first
Desire is hard to tell. Each one would feed
The other’s drought with floods to cure our lacks.
We surge towards each other, fluid in
Our desperation. Both are like new sacks
To hold old wine, each one a thirsty twin.
While drinking love, we feel the gushing smart
Of perfect pain. Each fills the other’s heart.
