Elijah Translated in a Blazing Chariot Becomes Undying

We spend our days translating English from
Trash phrases into tongues of fire and flame.
We save the language textbooks overcome
With prose. We sway our English from the shame
Of usefulness to glory, as was meant
For poetry and myths of love. The fire
In Sappho’s veins turns passion’s lust, godsent,
To immortality. We sweep desire
From English, Greek and Latin—and make
Them rage, rampage with what they want to say.
We force them from tame words and make them shake
With their tectonic quakes, make stallions neigh.
Before the lucred commerce of greed’s world
We poets conjured sorcery unfurled.
