Postpartum

A sonnet inspired by the painting “Au Bal,” by Berthe Morisot
When women see a thing, they see it not
As men do. Just as color blindness comes
To men more often, so their insights clot
Around male oriented stuff. The crumbs
That fall to men from feasting tables of
The women guys grab up. Men fail to note
Most facts from females. When it comes to love,
Men tend to see the shape of breasts, a throat
For kissing, all that sort of frou-frou stuff.
It is as if men think of silk as smooth
Instead of strong like steel and not tres tough.
The females are for men to trim — then soothe.
The agonies of labor lasting hours
Or days seem slight, men blind to women’s powers.
