Suppose a football striker won a fee

For poetry.  Would teammates rush to hug

Him, crushing chest to sweaty chest.  Would he

Be lauded in the tv moment’s fug

Of clammy perspiration on the field?

Suppose a university sent out

A payment for his sonnet.  Would this yield

A roar from football fans, a Guinness shout?

Suppose that he received a payment for

A villanelle a little magazine

Had published.  Would that be as good a score

As one clear kick in goal by millions seen?

..And when 500 years have passed and one

….Page holds the verse, who’d think how he had run?
