The Longest, Tallest Whole Notes Ever

The Longest, Tallest Whole Notes Ever

“Seen melodies are sweet but those unseen are sweeter.”

The eyeless melody rains down.  The sky

Seems filled with music—and the space beneath

The blue demands the listening grateful eye

Should search above the level of the heath

And find the hero sending out the lines

Of beauty, but the source remains unseen.

Would loveliness be lessened if the signs

Of whipping wings above all this, so clean

In their invisibility, were spied?

Would speck of feathers flashing in the air

Reduce the joy below if they were eyed?

Would music seem less lovely?  Would despair,

In skylark size, however small, result?

The sightless listener would, still, exult.
