Sempiternity

The chambered nautilus goes pulsing through
Dark depths. It pulses underneath the waves
For eons rocking gently, steady, true
Enough to last. It does not think of graves.
Far better are its thoughts of ocean floors
And near eternity. Forever lasts
This utter creature at the very doors
Of immortality and then it casts
Its carapace, a coffin it rejects
For higher things, perfections it has longed
For . There its blue tear eye, navy, deflects,
(While upside down) its death. Fate knows life wronged
The others down below since, in God’s brine,
The rest of them decay, scuttling shine.
