The summer grove; my

Mind is struck by a small stone

That came from somewhere.

~ Buson

The green of summer leaves in breeze and rain,

The brown and lighter brown of limb and bark,

The darker green of evergreens, the plane

Trees with their scales of light and scar-like dark

Modalities confer together for

A meaning or for something far more dense

Than meaning, for a silence with a roar

In something like the still, small voice, with sense

Much greater than mere meaning.  Something small

Beneath them, something like a little stone,

Plain speckles, two tones underneath the tall

Trees teaches something we have always known

But never grasped.  Exactly what this means

Is sealed.  What matters are the browns and greens.
