Moving towards Painted Velvet Perfumes
The spring of white and pink is almost past.
The yellows disappeared as well. Now cream
And purples, pale and dark, have come at last.
The heats of summer’s green, green, green now seem
As far away as perfect charity,
As perfect love. The white and pink of trees,
As apple blossoms in their clarity,
Magnolias and cherries with degrees
Of white and purest pink (and cultured pink
Infused with lavender) are soon replaced
By lilacs and wisteria. They drink
Up our attention. Breezes now are laced
With heavier aromas, predictions
Of summer’s intemperate convictions.
