God is Night-time Darkness
“The garden needs planting but moonlight has arrested the heavens”
~ Jaime Mathis
“the darkness and the light are both alike in thee” ~ Psalm 139:12
I always dreamed that I would build a Moon
Garden — and then, when I arrived beside
The Great Rift Valley’s edge, my afternoon
Veranda showed a square to be the bride
Of that long reverie. I set my heart
And hands to work. I ordered plants and seeds
And bulbs. I dug the shapes. I drew the chart
For planting heaven on earth to fill my needs
For ideal love in bushes, blossoms, vines,
Moons, quarter moons, and crescent moons in white,
New moons, half moons in beds with curving lines
Of roses that at midnight would be bright
In purity beneath the lunar light, beneath the stars.
But heaven’s planning cut me only scars.
