Ashoka chose to speak. He spoke in stone.
The Buddha was his guide. His spirit glowed.
Enlightenment’s and kingliness’s tone
Shine down millennia in lines bestowed
By chanting of the emperor in piers
He raised with words. The other ancient kings
Were silent and are silent now. If tears
Were in among their legacy, it sings
A silent song. This Ashoka only
Among the centuries speaks unendingly.
He among the royalty, lonely
In constancy, sets edicts, blendingly
Including solitary regal speech.
Ashoka, he alone, still has his reach.
