The church presents itself as  God’s own stop

Sign just before the precipice to Hell.

This church is far too ugly.  It’s main crop

Is guilt.  Beside the church waits its main well

Of hate and condemnation that it calls

God’s love.  The priest comes out and pulls a rope,

And what comes up?  (Inside expectant walls

The congregation waits.)  A muddled hope

The priest delivers from his pail.  Perhaps

He gives a sip of wine or broken bread.

These gifts are said to offer light, but slaps

Of guilt are what they give.  The truth glows dead.

In every accent known to humans guilt

Comes at them.  Heaven’s rivers bring sad silt.
